Prescription Drug Abuse Discussed at Conference

Across Tennessee and the nation prescription drug abuse is the focus of substance abuse treatment and law enforcement.

Nine speakers gathered with medical and law enforcement professionals and providers to speak from a medical point of view about treatment and prevention of those addicted to prescription drugs.

Experts said in the past month between six and seven million Americans have abused prescription medications and young people between 12 and 17 years old, abuse a prescription painkiller for the first time. Medical personnel said availability is a contributing factor.

"They have the prescriptions and they use if for pain or from surgery procedures and at some point while they're taking it, they do become addicted to the prescription medication. and I think the stigma of prescription drug abuse usually is not there for a lot of people because it's not the same thing and having to buy the illegal drugs on the street or things like that," said Sid Nichols, conference chairman.

The Community Anti-Drug Coalition organized and conducted the Rx for Addiction Conference.
