MILAN, Tenn. - Many in the City of Milan are in shock after learning one of of their city's finest was arrested.

Milan Police Chief Tim Wright said the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is handling the case and because of that he cannot speak about the allegations. Neighbors and family members of Adam Scott Martin had plenty to say.

"He ain't kind of man. He ain't that kind of man," said neighbor John Hampton.

"There's no way. I personally, I do not believe the allegations," said family member Adam Eddings.

Officer Martin was arrested and charged Tuesday with one count of sexual battery by an authority figure against a 19-year-old woman.

Neighbors said authorities picked Martin up from his home on Gann Drive, Tuesday.

Lynda Freeman lives next door to Martin and said her son and Martin grew up together. Both now work for the Milan Police Department and the thought of what could be true frightens her.

Freeman said, "When I heard the real story of it, what they said, we just hardly rested. Can"t hardly stand the thought of it."

Eddings said, "He plays with my kids. I could never imaging him doing anything like that."

Another unidentified neighbor said, "Give the man a chance to prove his innocence."

According to Chief Wright, Martin, a 10-year veteran with the department has been suspended with pay pending the outcome of the investigation.

Martin was released on a $15,000 bond Tuesday. He is scheduled to appear in General Sessions Court next Tuesday, July 10.
