SELMER, Tenn. - The National Guard, beauty queens and antique cars filled the streets of Selmer to show their American spirit.

Selmer officials said the parade is all about celebrating freedom.

"Just to celebrate. Let everybody know we care about America and our freedom, and let people know that we're here that we are still spirited," said Sybill Dancer, Selmer Parks and Recreation.

The men from the Selmer American Legion Post said Independence Day is an important day.

"I think the Fourth of July, we think of the birth of the nation, we think of why the nation is here. And how it remains here is because of the service of individuals who give their time freely," said Harold Vetter..

He said Independence Day is the perfect time to tell young children about how the nation was founded, and the principles our nation represents.

"We've kind of lost our concept of where we are in America, and what we are as Americans. We have a great deal to be thankful for, those people that served before us they made this country what it is today," said Vetter..

Selmer Parks and Recreation officials said the Freedom Festival will continue Wednesday night with live entertainment. The fireworks start at 9:15 p.m. at Selmer Park.
