Area teens are believed responsible for a rash of mailbox vandalisms in the Springbrook community of northeast Madison County. But the sheriff says this is anything but a summer-time prank. At least 10 mailboxes were vandalized within a 24-hour period, which amounts to a serious crime according to law enforcement.

Deputies say the largest number of mailboxes were hit along Southshore Drive, Doak Mason Road and adjacent streets.

A witness told deputies individuals, likely juveniles, were seen riding through the area on all-terrain vehicles when the damage occurred.

Investigators say they have recovered a metal pipe believed to have been used to hit the mailboxes.

"Mailboxes technically could be considered property of the U.S. Postal Service and that could be a federal offense," said Sheriff David Woolfork. "Though we're not looking at going that direction right now, you have to bear in mind that the charges could be very serious."

If you know who is responsible for the rash of vandalisms call the Madison County Sheriff's Department at (731) 423-6000 or CrimeStoppers at (731) 424-TIPS.
