UPDATED: Sheriff's Deputy Resigns after Excessive Force Allegations

UPDATE: According to Madison County Sheriff David Woolfork, Sergeant Lavonia K. Black submitted her letter of resignation, Thursday morning.

Her resignation letter stated in part, “I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your help and assistance during my 9½ years of service with the department.”

JACKSON, Tenn. – A Madison County Sheriff’s Deputy has been suspended after allegations she used excessive force on a prisoner.

According to a news release, Sergeant Lavonia K. Black, 64, was suspended with pay October 5. The department is investigating the incident which reportedly happened during the early morning hours of October 5. A due process hearing is scheduled for October 17.

According to Sheriff David Woolfork, Sergeant Black has been employed with the Madison County Sheriff’s Office as a correctional officer since March 2003. She was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in July 2011.
