JACKSON, Tenn. - Parishioners are heading to St. Mary's Catholic Church to take part in traditional Ash Wednesday services.

The services mark the beginning of the season of Lent - a period of 40 days during which many Christians prepare for Easter by observing a period of fasting, repentance, and spiritual discipline in preparation for Easter Sunday.

Led by Deacon Jim Moss and Father Thomas Kirk, St. Mary's is marking Ash Wednesday with several services for Christian believers.

"Ash Wednesday makes me realize that Jesus died on the cross for me, and this helps me to get through these 40 days to think about what I need to sacrifice to give back for the sacrifice he made for me," said Joy Boller, who attends St. Mary's.

The final service was held at 7 p.m. at the church located on the Highway 45 Bypass.
