Teen Shot in West Jackson

JACKSON, Tenn. - Jackson Police said a teenage boy was shot multiple times in his abdomen by another juvenile following an argument, Saturday.

Police said the shooting happened just after 9:30 p.m. in the 900 block of Old Hickory Boulevard in West Jackson. Neighbors told WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News that there was a group of teens gathered in the apartment complex parking fighting.

"There was a fight earlier that night and then 30 minutes to an hour later a young boy got shot," said neighbor Lachanda Perry. "A child, he was 16, he was still somebody else' s child and he could have died last night."

Investigators said the 16-year-old was shot multiple times in his abdomen by another underage boy.

"He is a minor. What is a minor doing with a handgun that's the point," said Perry. "What is a minor doing with a handgun, shooting a 16 year old child?"

Neighbors said the teenage violence is getting out of control. Witnesses said after the shooting, a group of teenagers came back to the crime scene and fired off more rounds in the area.

"It's really sad they did not stop after last night. They just kept on shooting," said Perry. "It's ridiculous, a crying shame that kids their age can't come outside at night, in the evening time or around 8 o'clock to play in their yard because somebody's out here shooting."

Jackson Police collected nearly eight shell casings that were scattered across the parking lot, Sunday morning. Neighbors said they heard at least 12 rounds Saturday night.

"There is no sense for little kids to be going around with guns now, it's dangerous," said neighbor Antonio Williams. "They get guns and they act like they aren't scared to use them. It scares me."

Children living in the area said this isn't the first time teen gun violence has happened in their neighborhood. Many children said they have grown too afraid to play outside.

"I started crying because I got scared," said Kelisha Jones, who is 12 years old. "It really scared me because my two little cousins like to be outside at nighttime to play in their backyard and see it could have been one of them that got shot."

Police said the victim is in stable condition in the ICU at the Jackson Madison County General Hospital.

Officers said they have charged a 15-year-old boy with two counts of attempted murder for shooting at the victim and another 20-year-old man.

The teen is currently being held in Madison County's juvenile detention center.
