Three arrests made in undercover prostitution sting

DOWNTOWN JACKSON -- Three women have been arrested after a prostitution sting in Jackson on Thursday night.

Undercover officers arrested Sadie Merriweather, 54, and Tequilla Jones, 36, about an hour apart after police say they offered to perform sexual favors on the undercover officers in exchange for money.

Business owners in the area like Robert Cole say they are happy Jackson Police are keeping up patrols.

"It's helping the crime," Cole said. "Anytime the police do their job it helps the crime."

Jackson police conducted their most recent prostitution sting around 7:30 p.m. Thursday night, covering Hayes Avenue and Airways Blvd.

Captain Tyreece Miller says it's with citizens help they've made these arrest.

"We routinely do these and as long as we're getting the complaints, we will continue to do it," Capt. Miller said. "So it's going to be driven by the citizens."

Cole, whose business is on Airways Blvd., says police presence is key.

"Well I think it's good. We have a lot of kids that live down the road," Cole said. "To have any activity like that, it doesn't need to be in this vicinity at all."

One of the women arrested, Sabrina Cox, was found after she posted an escort ad on the website BackPage.com.

"An undercover officer answered the ad and then responded and met her at a Jackson hotel," Capt. Miller said.

Capt. Miller says prostitution in Jackson usually goes hand in hand with drug activity.

"Some women will use drugs to numb themselves to prostitute," Capt. Miller said. "Others will prostitute to make money to buy the drugs."

Police say all three women are currently being held at the Madison County Jail.

A judge will set their bonds Saturday morning, but they won't make their first court appearance until Monday.
