JACKSON, Tenn. -Those who want to be certified to teach children using the Montessori method now have a new way to earn that certification.
During a special ceremony, the University of Tennessee at Martin and the Montessori Educational Institute of North America signed an agreement Tuesday between the two institutions to do just that.
University Chancellor Tom Rakes and leaders of the institute signed the formal agreement at the UT Martin Center in Jackson.
The collaboration will provide students who complete a Montessori teaching certificate and opportunity to earn graduate credits that can be applied toward a master's degree in education at UTM.
"These approaches are also useful to a teacher in a traditional classroom setting, public or private setting because they emphasize hands on participatory self directed learning," said Beth Quick, associate Professor at U.T. Martin.
