JACKSON, Tenn. - Union University hosted its 15th Annual Scholarship Banquet at the Carl Perkins Civic Center, Thursday evening.
The keynote speaker for the sold out crowd was former United States Secretary of Defense Robert Gates. Gates served in the cabinet position under two presidents and is a former President of Texas A&M University.
Earlier in the day, Gates toured Union's north Jackson campus. During his speech, he offered words of insight and encouragement. "The future of the world itself depends on the kind of people we modern Americans will prove to be, above all, the kind of citizens our you people will become," he said.
Union President David Dockery told the crowd the banquet raised half a million dollars in scholarship funds.
