2012 warmest year on record in Memphis
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - The year just ended was the warmest on record in Memphis.
National Weather Service meteorologist Marlene Mickelson told The Commercial Appeal the average temperature in the city during 2012 was 66 degrees. That compares with the previous mark of 65.6 degrees, set in 2007.
A long-lasting ridge of high pressure contributed to a scorching summer, during which temperatures in Memphis reached at least 100 degrees on 11 occasions.
The warmth in the city wasn't isolated. Nashville tied a record for its second-warmest year with an average temperature of 62.3 degrees. Last month, the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration said 2012 was "virtually certain" to be the warmest year on record in the contiguous United States. Confirmation should come next week.
