MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - A gang member convicted of killing a man on orders from the head of a violent drug ring that had ties to Mexican cartels has been sentenced to life in prison.

Martin Lewis was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Samuel H. Mays in Memphis on Friday.

A jury convicted Lewis in March 2012 of killing Mario McNeal at a Memphis restaurant. According to testimony, Lewis fatally shot McNeal on orders from gang leader Craig Petties, who wanted McNeal dead because he allegedly had threatened to kidnap Petties' mother and hold her for ransom.

Lewis and his cousin, Clinton Lewis, were convicted of being members of a drug organization led by Petties, who began selling drugs as a teen in Memphis before he was charged with being an international drug kingpin.
