Adult charges for teen accused of killing mom

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - A judge has decided to transfer to adult court the case of a 14-year-old boy charged with setting a house fire that killed his mother.

Shelby County Juvenile Court Special Judge Dan Michael ruled Tuesday that Jonathan Ray will face an adult charge of first-degree murder stemming from an April 5 fire that investigators say killed 45-year-old Gwendolyn Wallace.

Prosecutors say that Ray set on fire the stairs that led his mother's second-floor room because he was upset that she had grounded him.

The Commercial Appeal reports that Ray's lawyer, Robert Gowen, urged the judge to leave Ray in the juvenile system and place him in state custody where he could get mental health treatment.
