Backyard Birds Coming To Johnson City

By Associated Press

Chickens could become urban dwellers in Johnson City, after all.

The City Commission is working toward easing restrictions on keeping backyard chickens in residential areas of the city, according to The Johnson City Press (http://bit.ly/wegDUI ).

The group Chickens on our Property - or C.O.O.P. - presented a plan on Jan. 19 that caused commission members to reconsider a previous ban on backyard chickens. There is not yet a date for commission consideration of a revised ordinance.

Under a plan being worked out, only hens could be kept for laying eggs, education or as pets. Roosters wouldn't be allowed because of their crowing. Other fowl would remain barred from the city.
