Ceremony for New Highway Patrol Building
The new Highway Patrol building in Meridian was being opened and dedicated Tuesday to a late local lawmaker.
The new headquarters for Troop H was being named the Charles Young Sr. Highway Patrol Building.
Young, a longtime Mississippi lawmaker, civil-rights activist and president of a company that manufactures black hair-care products, died in 2009 at the age of 77.
Young, a Democrat, was elected to the Mississippi House in 1979 and took office in 1980. He had served as chairman of the Universities and Colleges Committee from 1992 until the time of his death.
His son, Rep. Charles Young Jr., a Democrat, was elected to the House seat.
Gov. Phil Bryant and other state and local dignitaries are expected to attend the dedication.
