Explosion, fire in Shelbyville prompt evacuation

SHELBYVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Shelbyville Police Chief Austin Swing says law enforcement is evacuating a ½-mile radius around a burning Southern Energy facility near downtown.

Swing says there were reports that some oil tanks in the facility may have exploded around 10:30 a.m. An ambulance was called for one person, but Swing did not know the person's condition.

Swing said the burning building is next door to the Bedford County workhouse where jail inmates who are approved for work release live. It is also next to the county animal control facility.
