Firefighters Stop Ammonia Leak

By Associated Press

A leak of anhydrous ammonia has been stopped at a Chattanooga chemical plant and a busy highway reopened.

The leak was discovered around 5 a.m. CST Tuesday at the BASF Corporation plant. A hazardous materials crew located the source and shut down the leak a couple of hours later.

Chattanooga Fire Department spokesman Bruce Garner said authorities waited until the vapor evaporated to be certain the leak had been stopped and then reopened a section of the Amnicola Highway near the plant. An evacuation of a local industrial area near the plant was lifted.

There were no injuries reported in the incident and no immediate cause of the leak was given.
