Fishing increasingly hooking high school ranks
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - High school anglers shouldn't have much trouble finding bass fishing competitions these days.
The first B.A.S.S. High School Classic Exhibition Saturday is just the latest example of the rise in opportunities for teens to compete on the lakes. High school anglers from five states will get to weigh in on the same Alabama stage as the pros in this weekend's Bassmaster Classic.
Beyond that new event, the high school associations in Illinois, Kentucky and New Hampshire now sanction bass fishing as a sport or activity and hold state championships.
In Missouri, it's recognized as an emerging activity with 30 schools participating.
Hundreds of schools in other states have club teams.
The Student Angler Federation has been holding high school championships in 45 states since 2010.
