Former MS Mayor Dies
Former Tchula Mayor Yvonne R. Brown, the first black Republican female mayor in Mississippi, has died. She was fifty-nine.
Officials at Century Funeral Home in Yazoo City said Brown died Monday at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Columbus. The family said Brown died of cancer. Services are May 5 at ten a.m. at New Jerusalem Church in Jackson.
Brown was Tchula's mayor from 2001 to 2009. She also was the Republican nominee for Congress in Mississippi's 2nd Congressional District in 2006, losing to Democratic incumbent Bennie Thompson.
She was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 2004.
Survivors include two daughters, her mother, two sisters and two grandchildren.
