Former Memphis police officer sentenced to prison
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - A former Memphis police officer has been sentenced to one year and a day in prison for driving a woman to a party at a north Mississippi hotel so she could have sex.
U.S. District Judge S. Thomas Anderson sentenced Sean McWhirter on Tuesday in federal court in Memphis.
McWhirter pleaded guilty in October to transporting a person across state lines for prostitution. McWhirter acknowledged driving a woman to a casino-hotel in Tunica, Miss., to engage in sex acts at a party.
McWhirter was arrested in September 2012, and he has resigned from the Memphis Police Department.
McWhirter had faced up to 10 years in prison but received a much shorter sentence partly because he acknowledged guilt and had no prior criminal record.
