Former Probation Officer Accused of Theft

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation says it has arrested a former Montgomery County probation officer on allegations of theft.

The TBI says 40-year-old Derrel Denton was booked into Montgomery County Jail on Tuesday on an official misconduct charge. The agency says Denton stole more than $5,000 in restitution payments from about 17 juveniles under his supervision while employed as a juvenile court probation officer from October 2010 to July 2011.

Denton also had outstanding warrants against him including driving on a revoked license, a seat belt violation and driving without a registration or insurance. He was booked on those charges as well and was given a $6,000 bond.

The county's online court records do not show if Denton has a lawyer.
