Immigrants want declaration agents acted illegally
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - A group of immigrants seized at a Nashville apartment complex in 2010 are asking a federal judge to rule that immigration agents acted illegally.
On Friday, U.S. District Judge Todd Campbell heard arguments that five plaintiffs were in an apartment when Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers came through a window and arrested them. An additional four plaintiffs said they were in a car when they were surrounded and arrested.
In both cases, the plaintiffs claim the actions were illegal because the officers had no warrants and no evidence of wrongdoing. The nine Hispanic men who were arrested were charged with civil immigration violations.
ICE is asking the judge to dismiss the claims, saying the officers were investigating gang activity and acted appropriately.
Campbell did not indicate when he would rule.
