Jackson, MS Trying to Avoid Overtime Pay
The city of Jackson is offering 255 police officers huge amounts of time off to avoid paying them overtime owed over two years.
The officers, who represent more than half the city force, had until last Friday to sign an agreement converting unpaid wages to an hour-and-a-half of compensatory time for every hour of overtime worked.
The settlement offers come after negotiations with the U.S. Department of Labor.
A Labor Department investigation found that officers had been denied proper payment for overtime hours worked.
The newspaper reports the city would not answer requests for the total amount of hours offered nor the potential cost of wages.
Mayor Harvey Johnson Jr. said that whatever solution is reached, the city would not do anything to hurt public safety.
