Jury Awards Dead Teen's Family

By news admin

A central Kentucky jury has awarded the family of a boy killed while driving his youth minister's vehicle $2.15 million.
The outcome was on Thursday of a lawsuit by the family of 13-year-old Jamie Mitchell against the Big Springs Assembly of God church and former youth minister Derek Coulter.
Jamie was driving Coulter's sport utility vehicle along a winding rural road near Bardstown in the summer of 2009 as they went to retrieve tents from a youth group campout. Coulter initially told police he was driving and lost control after trying to avoid a deer. Another boy who was in the vehicle told the truth about what happened.
A separate criminal case against Coulter ended in conviction and a prison sentence for him.
