Lawyer hoped award would help US-Russian adoption

BRENTWOOD, Tenn. (AP) - An attorney who fought to win child support payments for a Russian boy whose adoptive mother sent him back alone on a plane said the new ban preventing Americans from adopting Russian children is the sort of thing he was hoping to prevent.

On Thursday Russian lawmakers passed a bill banning U.S. adoptions. The ban is seen as retaliation for a U.S. law targeting Russians deemed to be human rights violators. But lawmakers cited cases of mistreatment of Russian adoptees as the reason for the ban.

President Vladimir Putin signed the bill on Friday.
