Lawyer quips to judge: Call me Capt. Justice
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - A Tennessee defense attorney has responded to a prosecutor's request to be referred to as "general" and other titles with a request of his own: Just call me "Captain Justice."
The suggestion came in response to a motion from Assistant District Attorney General Tammy Rettig in which she asked to be referred to as "General Rettig," among other titles.
Rettig argued in her motion that some defense attorneys refer to prosecutors as "the government" in court to "inflame the jury."
In his response, defense attorney Drew Justice argued the motion should be dismissed. Alternately, he suggested that he be referred to as "Captain Justice" or "defender of the innocent" and that the defendant be called "that innocent man."
The judge denied the motion in a hearing last week.
