Legionnaires' disease confirmed in Shelby County

By news admin

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - The Shelby County Health Department has confirmed cases of Legionnaires' disease, likely associated with a fitness club.

According to The Commercial Appeal (http://bit.ly/1cPnxHv ), department spokeswoman Elizabeth Hart said in an email that three cases have been confirmed, resulting in no deaths. Areas of the 24 Hour Fitness USA Inc. club in the eastern part of the county have been closed for inspection and cleaning. Those include the swimming pool, the steam room and the spa.

The health department said all three cases may have been contracted at the club. The bacteria that cause the disease often breeds in wet areas, including air conditioning systems, pools and steam rooms.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says up to 18,000 people are hospitalized with the disease each year.
