Mississippi Valley State University is laying off about four percent of its staff as a response to continued state budget cuts.
Spokeswoman TaRessa Stovall says the twenty-one employees being laid off include clerical personnel, service personnel and mid-level managers. The cuts take effect June 30. She says the affected employees were not offered severance packages.
Sam McNair, president of the university's Faculty Senate, who was notified earlier of his own termination, was critical of the most recently announced cuts.
He said the staff reductions are "window dressing," mostly affecting secretaries and other lower-paid positions.
Stovall said the university doesn't expect more layoffs at this time.
