MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Memphis City Council member Janis Fullilove has been acquitted in domestic violence court after her attorneys argued prosecutors didn't prove the domestic violence charge.

The Commercial Appeal ( ) reported Judge Chris Turner on Tuesday found her not guilty during a bench trial.

After the ruling, Fullilove said the case should have been dismissed long ago. Similar charges against her husband, Vernon Chalmers, were dismissed before the trial, and neither of them wanted the case to go forward.

Police were called to the couple's home after midnight on Aug. 28, where they found broken dishes and Chalmers with a bleeding cut on his left forearm.

State prosecutor Danielle McCollum said that while it was a circumstantial case, Fullilove told officers she was angry and suspected her husband was cheating.
