Memphis schools plan cutting at least 97 teachers
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - As the Memphis city school system is being phased out, the district is preparing to fire 97 teachers and is evaluating 46 others for possible termination.
The Commercial Appeal reported the list is the longest in the district's history. It comes two years after the state mandated a more stringent evaluation process to weed out ineffective teachers.
Listed teachers who have tenure are suspended without pay, pending tenure hearings. Those without tenure will get their final paychecks next month.
If every teacher on the list is dismissed, Memphis will have fired about 2 percent of its teachers.
Memphis and Shelby County schools are being consolidated this summer.
