Murfreesboro Mosque Controversy

By news admin

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - The state Court of Appeals must decide whether Rutherford County officials acted improperly in approving building plans for a new mosque in Murfreesboro.

A group of residents sued the county in 2010, claiming officials did not give proper notice of the meeting where the Islamic Center of Murfreesboro was approved. The residents eventually won their case but not until construction was nearly complete.

When the judge ordered the county to withhold an occupancy permit, mosque leaders went to federal court and were granted an emergency order that allowed them use the building.

Meanwhile, the county appealed the ruling on meeting notice. The Daily News Journal reports the Appeals Court heard arguments on
Tuesday. One judge asked why litigation should continue, given that the mosque is already built.
