NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Police in Nashville say a man with a long arrest record has slashed a 13-year-old boy who was defending his grandmother.

The youth was taken to Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt University and police said he is expected to recover.

The Tennessean (http://tnne.ws/1cjRBNT) reported that Harold Ransom, who is 60, was arrested after the incident early Tuesday at a public housing project.

Nashville Police Capt. Kenneth Walburn said Ransom, the teen and other people were at a large party when the youth saw Ransom shove the boy's grandmother. Walburn said when the youth came to his grandmother's aid, Ransom slashed his chest with a pocket knife.

Police said Ransom has been arrested 61 times previously in Nashville on a number of charges that include aggravated assault.
