Red Wolf in MS Zoo Dies
Sunset, the Jackson Zoo's female red wolf, has died at age 11.
Zoo officials said in a news release Wednesday Sunset was euthanized this past week after being treated for weight loss and lack of appetite.
Zoo staff says the wolf, born in May 2001 at the Brevard, Fla., zoo, didn't respond to treatment for suspected cancer of the bladder and end-stage kidney disease.
Sunset came to the Jackson Zoo in 2002 on breeding loan, but she never bore cubs.
Zoo officials say she lost a leg as a young wolf after developing a severe bacterial infection.
The red wolf is one of the world's most endangered wild animals.
One male red wolf remains at the Jackson Zoo.
