Trial Set for Resident's Lawsuit
A federal judge in East Tennessee has granted class action status to a lawsuit over discharges into the Pigeon River.
U.S. District Court Judge Ronnie Greer has certified the lawsuit - one of several in a decades-long series of court battles between Tennessee property owners and a western North Carolina paper mill.
The three-hundred residents given class action status live in Cocke County, downstream from the Blue Ridge Paper Products mill in Canton, N.C. They claim wastewater from the plant has caused health problems and lowered the value of their property.
Greer set Oct. 2 for the lawsuit to go to trial in Greeneville.
