Tuscaloosa company buys Decatur port
DECATUR, Ala. (AP) - A Tuscaloosa company has purchased a main port on the Tennessee River in north Alabama.
Parker Towing co. has bought the Port of Decatur from Decatur Transit Inc., which owned it for 43 years.
The Decatur Daily (http://bit.ly/1uSypz1 ) reports that records show the price was $1.63 million.
Parker Towing executive Tim Parker says the company plans to keep the 25 employees currently at the port.
The shipping center is the largest privately owned port on the Tennessee River. It loads and unloads barges and switches cargo between barges, rail and trucks.
Parker Towing is one of the largest barge lines in the Southeast. It offer tug services in Jefferson County, Northport, Pickensville, and Chattanooga, Tennessee.
