Voter registration urged on Tuesday
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - State elections officials nationwide have declared Tuesday National Voters Registration Day to encourage people to register and participate.
The voter education push is part of the National Association of Secretaries of State's National Voter Registration Month this September. The association said in a news release that an estimated 10.6 percent of Americans of voting age are not registered.
Tennessee Secretary of State Tre Hargett is president of national organization. His office is working with county election officials and encouraging the use of social media to make eligible voters aware of registration deadlines and requirements.
The Commercial Appeal says Shelby County Election Commissioner Dee Nollner will be registering voters, and her Facebook page shows a series of photographs of her friends holding signs that read, "I'm registered to vote. Are you?"
