W. Ky. bridge slip another foot

LEDBETTER, Ky. (AP) - The Transportation Cabinet says an old bridge over the Tennessee River in western Kentucky that is slated for demolition has dropped by another foot.

Cabinet spokesman Keith Todd says the slippage occurred early Friday at the Old Ledbetter Bridge between Paducah and Livingston County. He says a check of the bridge found a pier had moved causing the approach span deck above to drop.

Officials have been monitoring the bridge since April, when they first noticed slippage.

The bridge, which opened in 1931, was closed to traffic last July after a new bridge was completed.

Todd says a contractor began moving equipment this week to the bridge to prepare for an emergency demolition.
