Woman, 84, dies after fire at her Columbia home
COLUMBIA, Tenn. (AP) - A Columbia woman has died from injuries she received in a fire at her home.
The Daily Herald (http://bit.ly/10Oz7jO ) reported the 84-year-old victim was pulled from the burning house Wednesday morning by her grandson and taken by helicopter to Vanderbilt University Hospital in Nashville. She died a few hours later.
Fire officials said it appeared the woman fell asleep while sitting on a couch and smoking, setting fire to her clothing and the couch.
Assistant Fire Chief Tony Scott said the grandson helped the victim out of the house and was fighting the fire with a garden hose when firefighters arrived. The woman was lying on the patio.
Scott said the grandson lived in the basement. He said the victim had multiple burns to her body.
