Generals had tying run on first when game was called in sixth inning
Birmingham, ALA (June 17, 2013) – The Birmingham Barons (46-24) won their second straight game over the Generals (27-39) Monday afternoon 1-0, in a five inning rain shortened game at Regions Field.
Rain hit downtown Birmingham in the top of the sixth inning as Jackson had Denny Almonte at first after a walk, and nobody out. After a 47 minute rain delay the game was called due to the rain that had fallen and more on the way.
The Barons grabbed the only run of the game in the first inning, the third time in the series they had scored in the first frame. Trayce Thompson, who had three hits, scored off an Andy Wilkins double. Ji-Man Choi notched two of the three Generals hits in the losing effort.
Erik Johnson (W, 8-2, 2.23) earned his league leading eighth win for the Barons, as Anthony Fernandez (L, 3-3, 5.77) took a tough loss after settling in following the first inning. With the win, Birmingham took the series, 3-2, including the last two games. The season record between the two teams sits at 5-5. Jackson is scheduled to have a day off on Tuesday. Jackson is now 10-19 in one-run games and were shutout for the seventh time this season.
The Generals get back into action on Wednesday against the Mobile BayBears. Roenis Elias (3-6, 2.92) will start for the Generals. The BayBears will counter with Bradin Hagens (7-3, 2.68).
