Generals Drop Series Finale to Smokies, 6-4
GENERALS NEWS RELEASE
Vinnie Catricala hits first homer in Jackson’s loss Thursday
JACKSON, TENN – (May 16, 2013) – The Jackson Generals (16-22) fell Thursday night in the final matchup of the five-game series against the Tennessee Smokies (20-19), 6-4. Smokies designated hitter Ty Wright (2-4, 4 RBI) bashed two home runs and Jackson only mustarded four hits, as the Generals remain nine games back in the Southern League North.
Wright started the scoring in the top of the first, wasting no time to deposit a pitch over the wall in left. The Generals got some help in their half of the first as Matt Loosen (1-1, 8.24) walked four hitters, which helped the Generals even things at two.
After home runs by both teams in the third, Jackson got it back to even in the fourth with a Leon Landry (0-3, RBI, R, BB) groundout that scored James Jones (0-1, 2 BB, R)
Jackson reliever Forrest Snow (L, 1-5, 4.30) struck out three in two innings of work, but an RBI double from Smokies’ catcher Rafael Lopez, and a wild pitch cost the Generals two runs, and would be the deciding factor in the game.
Jackson starter Anthony Fernandez (1-0, 8.84) got a no decision after working five innings and surrendering four earned runs on five hits. Fernandez gave up the two home runs to Wright, but left with the score tied.
Vinnie Catricala (2-4, HR, 2 RBI) kept his hot streak at the plate going, hitting his first home run of the year in the fourth. Catricala boosted his average up to .262. Brad Miller (1-4) extended his hitting streak to seven games, as Julio Morban’s (0-4, 3 K) season high hit streak for a Generals player, came to a close at twelve.
Tennessee’s starter Matt Loosen threw 93 pitches over four innings, giving six free passes. All four runs from the Generals were charged to Loosen. Reliever A.J. Morris (W, 2-0, 5.63) threw three scoreless innings to earn the victory.
The Windy City Homestand continues tomorrow night for the Generals as they welcome the first place Birmingham Barons to the Ballpark in Jackson. Roenis Elias (2-3, 3-09) is scheduled to go for the Generals. The Barons will send Spencer Arroyo (3-1, 1.99) to the mound. Game begins at 7:05 CST
