Softball on the Rise in West Tennessee

Adam Wells

Over the years the West Tennessee area has produced some of the best softball teams and players in the state. And its not just at the High School level, it applies the college game as well.

In the past five years high schools in West Tennessee have produced seven state titles. Three of them coming from Trinity Christian Academy.

On the collegiate diamond both the UT Martin and Union softball teams have turned heads on a National level by making respective runs at National Titles.

Overall the game of softball has evolved in the area. Just ask USJ Head Coach Brian Dunn who has spent almost 20 years coaching in West Tennessee.

"Its unbelievable," Coach Dunn said. "Since 2006 West Tennessee has brought home several titles with TCA, Camden, Riverside, and USJ. It's really come a long way in a short amount of time with the titles. Its made the state aware of West Tennessee teams."

This weekend several former players and teams from West Tennessee took center stage in National Tournaments.

*Former TCA standout Pitcher Ivy Renfroe led Tennessee to two wins on Sunday over Virginia Tech. The Lady Vols now move into the Super Regionals of the NCAA Tournament taking on Georgia.

*The UT Martin Lady Skyhawks made their second ever trip to the National Tournament. Martin fell to #2 Alabama before falling to Georgia Tech on Saturday. Martin finished the season (39-22).

*The Union Lady Bulldogs went (1-2) in pool play of the NAIA National Tournament. The Lady Bulldogs finished the season (46-12).
