JACKSON, Tenn. - Danny Green and David Salyers own three of the six previous Stone Cup Championships.

So the opening round of action was nothing more than a warm-up for these seasoned golfers.

"Some people gotta play well. For me, I just got to go through the motions and play,” said Green.

“They're taking 16 people and all you got to do is shoot about 156, or 160."

Green, 55, has the top seed entering match play. He shot a two day total of 135. Green is the reigning champion, but Salyers has multiple titles.

"I think I'm the only two-time champion," said Salyers.

He’s right.

Salyers and Green are a big part of the tournament’s past, but they could be staring into the future as Union University golfer Brett Barry looks to earn his first Stone Cup title.

UT golfer Marshall Talkington made the cut, but withdrew because the match play round on July 7 and 8 will conflict with his summer schedule.

"They have a tremendous amount of talent,” said Salyers.

“They hit the ball well, they've got good short games and they've got a lot of potential," said Salyers.

"Some of the best talent here are college golfers, and I expect that we'll be right there when it comes down to it,” said Brett Barry.

He’s preparing for his final year at Union and the school’s first season against Gulf South Conference competition. Barry, 21, enters the match play round with the number two seed after shooting a 67 for a two day total of 138.

2012 could have been Talkington's year.

"I've been runner-up twice,” said Talkington.

Talkington, 21, finished the opening weekend with a two day total of 146. He would have been seeded sixth in match play. He finished second to Salyers in 2009.

"I am one of the older guys, I’m over 50. I’ll be 51 this summer so it's fun to compete against the up and coming talent," Salyers said.
