Vols believe they're on the verge of big things
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Tennessee has reached the midway point of its season with the same 3-3 record it had at this time last year.
The Volunteers believe the similarities end there.
Tennessee stumbled down the stretch last season and finished 5-7, a third straight losing season that resulted in the firing of Derek Dooley. The Vols say they've made major strides this year under new coach Butch Jones.
Tennessee cites as evidence last week's 34-31 overtime loss to No. 7 Georgia. The Vols are committing fewer penalties and forcing more turnovers this season.
The Vols (3-3, 0-2 SEC) will face more ranked teams when they return from their off week. Tennessee hosts No. 14 South Carolina on Oct. 19 and visits top-ranked Alabama and No. 25 Missouri the next two weeks.
