Champion of Character Award
Champion of Character: Janie Bistolfi - Sacred Heart
The soccer program at Sacred Heart of Jesus High School has progressed beyond the expectations anyone would set for an upstart program.
In just their second year of participation in the TSSAA, the Lady Knights collected 13 wins and a spot in the Region 7 A-AA final.
“We’ve been working for what we’ve earned and we are proud of ourselves,” said Lady Knight’s senior defender Janie Bistolfi.
That kind of success doesn't happen without senior leadership
It is one of the reasons why Bistolfi, Sacred Heart’s only senior, was selected as
this week’s Champion of Character.
Janie has been a member of the Sacred Heart soccer team since her freshmen year - back
then the program was a co-ed club team.
“She was out there playing with the boys her freshmen year and did very well,” said Sacred Heart head coach Kevin Odom.
Now a TSSAA girls’ varsity team, Sacred Heart has found success rather quickly.
“We’ve incorporated four new freshmen on the team this year and they really needed a senior leader and Janie was the one,” said Odom.
“When you have a good on-field leader like that, it makes them feel comfortable.
She led to our success,” said Odom.
“Being the only senior, I really needed to step up and lead,” said Bistolfi.
“They look up to me a lot and they tell me that. So it’s a big responsibility,” said Bistolfi.
Janie’s commitment to the program is paying off. The Lady Knights have secured a
spot in sub-state for the first time in the program’s history.
“We’re real excited about advancing,” said Bistolfi.
Coach Odom said Janie's leadership has been a major factor in the teams success.
“It’s an honor for me to be able to coach these young ladies. They don’t play for stats, they play for each other,” said Odom.
