Countdown to Kickoff: A look at the McKenzie Rebels

MCKENZIE, Tenn. - The McKenzie Rebels had a winning record in 2011 finishing 6-5 with a trip to the playoffs. Last year’s results are not meeting expectations when compared to recent years, though.

"Were not gonna have a knee jerk reaction just because we fell off a little," Rebels Head Coach Wade Comer said. "Everything is the same. People know what were gonna do and we've got a belief here that it’s not what you do its how you do it."

In 2012, McKenzie plans to win with a young team that returns 10 starters from last year’s team.

"We’re still a young football team," said Comer. "But, we have kids that hopefully are stepping up in leadership roles. We’re trying to find those pieces now."

The Rebels have many different players that could help them immediately on the field. One of those is returning quarterback Ty McClain.

"He’s shown improvement each and every day by making good decisions with the football," Comer said. "Hopefully we can continue that."

It’s usually the skill players that are the focus on a team’s offense.

"We've got some experience back there and trying to develop them and get mentally tough and be physical up front," Comer said.

The Rebels have made the postseason for 15 straight seasons. In order to make it 16 straight, everything has to come together.

"You need to get a little better each day,” stated Coach Comer. "It’s a long season and we need to be playing at our peak when the playoffs start."
