MILAN, Tenn. - You can't talk about West Tennessee football without mentioning the Milan Bulldogs. Milan is one of the most decorated teams in 2-A football with four state titles. So could 2012 be the year to get number five?

"We have several upperclassman," said Milan Head Coach Jeff Morris. "Several returning two year starters at key positions. They really set a tone that they are here to work every day."

Experience is the key this season as the Bulldogs return seven starters on both sides of the ball.

"We have a good nucleus," Coach Morris said. "On the defensive line and at linebacker [we] have experience to add. The skill players are good. The secondary is new but they are capable people but that's football."

Once again the ground and pound attack will be the focus on offense but look for a few new wrinkles with third year starting quarterback Caleb Powell.

"We’re trying to incorporate a tight end passing game," Morris said. "He can change plays based on defense and he’s able to do that. Were just further along that we would be and work more in units than individually."

Milan has been able to make their way to Murfreesboro three out of the last four seasons. Each of those times, the team finished as runners up.

"The long range vision is that I’d like to get back there and win it," Morris said. "The way you get to be a state champion is to progress every day."

It’s that progression that has Coach Morris believing that this team could be special.

"We’re in a good place for July with out having pads," Morris said. "But that doesn't mean you’re ready for August. We’re just in a good spot at the moment."
