Jim Pankovits spent 16 years in the Houston Astros organization. Pankovits spents the last two years in Houston’s Low-A affiliate Tri-City. Joining the Seattle Mariners provided the skipper with a move up to Double-A ball and it also allowed him the opportunity to follow in his father's footsteps.

“He’s been around theses areas a lot longer than I have,” said Pankovits during Media Day at Pringles Park on Wednesday.

Pankovits, who will turn 56 in August, is the new manager of the Jackson Generals.

His father Vince was a manager for the original Jackson Generals back in the mid-1950s.

“I grew up in baseball and it’s been my life,” said Pankovits

Pankovits has worn several hats since his playing days - including manager, roving infield instructor and minor league defense coordinator.

The new skipper said he's glad to be in Jackson.

“Here I am back in Jackson. It’s exciting for me to be here and I’m looking forward to it,” Pankovits said.

Pankovits said it’s impossible to know how good the team will be this season due to the player promotions and the amount of roster changes than go on at all the minor league level.

He did, however, share his expectations for the year.

“A championship,” said Pankovits.
