10-year-old girl qualifies for big motocross race

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - A 10-year-old girl from Somerville will be competing in a large national motocross race starting next week.

WMC-TV ( ) reports that Gracie Sparks has qualified for the AMA Amateur National Motocross Championships at Loretta Lynn's Ranch in Hurricane Mills. The race runs from July 29 through Aug. 3.

Sparks, who has been riding since she was 7 years old, earned one of just 1,446 qualifying positions for the race.

According to the race's website, she is one of about 25 riders who qualified in the girls' 9 to 11 age group.

Sparks will make the trip to the race with her mother, father, sister and training partner, Adam Sansone, from Collierville.
