Arnold Seeks New Direction for South Side Football Team
While some high school football teams are busy with spring practice, the South Side Hawks are in a state of shock.
Coach Carey Craig has been removed as head coach of the Hawks, effective at the end of the semester. Craig told ABC 7 Eyewitness Sports that he was not given a reason as to why he was relieved of his duties - only that the school was going in another direction.
Craig was an assistant at South Side for 13 seasons before taking the head coaching job at Humboldt. He returned to South Side in the 2008-2009 season after long time head coach Jerry Hayes retired.
South Side was 19-13 during Craig's three seasons as head coach.
South Side Principal Jimmy Arnold told ABC 7 Eyewitness Sports he hoped Craig would remain on the staff next year, but as an assistant.
It’s unclear who'll lead the team through spring practice. The Hawks were scheduled to being their spring drills in May.
Principal Arnold did not give a time table for hiring a new coach. He did say he is posting the opening soon and will begin the interviewing process.
