Attorneys for Vanderbilt player want case dropped

By news admin

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Defense attorneys for a former Vanderbilt player alleged to be involved in the gang rape of a woman in a campus dorm last June are accusing prosecutors of destroying or not preserving evidence.

The allegations were contained in a motion filed Tuesday asking for the case against Brandon Vandenburg to be dismissed.

The attorneys say the woman told police that then-Vanderbilt Coach James Franklin and his strength coach contacted her after the alleged assault, telling her they cared because she helped with recruiting. The filings didn't elaborate. They say the woman also told police that Franklin also had asked for help getting 15 "pretty girls together and form a team to assist with the recruiting."

Franklin now coaches at Penn State. Penn State Sports Information Director Jeff Nelson did not respond to an email from The Associated Press on Tuesday asking him for a comment from Franklin.
